There once was a li’l brown boy…
who never imagined that after growing up in a quiet Texas town he’d end up in New York City telling under-reported stories from around the world. Across all mediums.
But he did.
I have.
And that’s just the beginning…
In this photo to the left sat a TV. When my family finally quit all their helicoptering, that’s where I’d sneak off to watch:
The Little Mermaid, MTV, Michael Jordan, TeleEvangelists, Winnie Cooper
And sitting here is where I began to feel the lasting effects that a well told story can leave…
Later on, I’d end up at a local community college. I’d drop out of course. Again and again.
Then it was off to Manhattan’s Upper East Side. This time sticking it out at Hunter College where I started to see the kind of stories I wanted to tell. And how to tell them well.
I crossed over to Europe after looking for adventure. Everything I found and experienced I put down on paper.
Into stories about love affairs blossoming on the side of Spanish mountaintops. Original musicals that’d be performed across Europe. Even product copy for companies from around the globe.
Once back in New York I’d start writing original film scripts, short stories, branded content, along with writing, producing, editing, sound-designing for documentaries, ads, experimental film and audio, even podcasts, and so much more…
Being this boy, one who was raised by pop-culture storytelling and this almost insatiable drive to learn, make, and try, it’s hard for me to now know what to call myself. To know who I am…
Am I a writer?
I mean I am writing this right now.
Am I an editor ?
I have done that.
Am I a graphic designer?
People have paid me to be.
Am I a producer?
Whatever the f*** that means, sure I guess.
Am I a filmmaker?
You get the bit by now.
I’ll just say this. My name’s Remoy Philip.
I’m a storyteller. A thinker. A maker.
And a damn good one at that.
I’ll let the press coverage and recent work do the rest of the talking:
What do a filmmaker, a fashion CEO, and a farmer have in common? They’re episodes I got the chance to produce searching out climate change solutions from each of their perspectives.
Producer
How do real-life stories about Indian activists, students in the West Bank, migrant Californian farmworkers, and a NYC labor union connect? They’re stories my editorial vision brought together in this original 4 part doc series.
Executive Producer | Editor
How did The Jinx filmmakers discover Robert Durst’s shocking confession? And what happened next? I got the chance to share these revelations for the HBO companion pod. And they even got some awards attention.
Producer
Did I write and report on histories about Batman? On lesser-known Black abolitionists? Even hosted a couple episodes on gender discrimination? Yes, yes, and yes. I also notched 2022’s top episode.
Reporter - Producer
How does PETA get people to give a damn? Well, they bring in legendary filmmaker Mary Harron to direct a terrifying short. That’s when I stepped in to turn all the knobs for the final color, design, and sound.
Sound Design | Color Correction
What’s a serendipitous way to get to Sundance and SxSW? Well for me it meant just answering my phone when I happened to be in LA, and then making my way to the studio for a final sound mix for this short. The rest is history.
Associate Producer
The pandemic was such a liminal time. One that begged to be documented in a one-of-a-kind way. That’s why when OnAirFest put out a call for experimental audio, I jumped at the chance to produce a piece to try and meet that moment.
Producer | Composer
For three plus years IDA’s brought me in to sit on juries to hash it out over what films and documentary series from around the globe are meeting the highest standards in documentary storytelling.
Festival Juror
Can you make the connections between little league baseball, indigenous tribes in Canada, and porn? I have. By putting a magnifying glass to this thing we call gender and bringing all that I find to life for your ears.
Producer | Editor
When NYC’s institution for the documentary arts— Union Docs —decided to put on it’s first audio-documentary residency in 2021, it needed residents. So naturally I packed my bags and gear and headed their way.
Documentary Residency
Making an international feature doc— one that’s truly independent —that producer hat comes with a ton of weight. But what an opportunity that came to be. Because in the end we got to show on the big screen stories of Palestinians responding to the occupation in truly inspired ways.
Producer
Ever wish you had a peak-TV level show but one you could watch easily on your phone? Well that’s what I made. Meaning I wrote and directed Other Colors exclusively for your phone for the VRT app. And it happened to win some festival awards too.
