And I am Wondering

A girl with a narrow waist and long blonde hair lies in my bed. She is asleep and I am wondering where her dreams have taken her. I wonder if she'll remember me. As she grows into age, into a woman, will her heart always keep the pictures of who we are now. Outside, a big dog with old tall legs barks at the moon. Clouds move quietly and no one notices.

The room I'm in has a high ceiling with handsome wood beams that cross above. It smells used in here and I like it. A bag of mine is in the corner and is empty. All my things are in here and spread throughout. A favorite book of mine is on the floor. A few pairs of old worn socks are in a drawer. And as I sit here, late into a summer night watching basketball and holding onto what it once meant to me to be a boy and American, I think to myself how good it all is as outside the stars keep away the ghosts and the moon reminds us all of the hopefulness of tomorrow.
